Halogen-Free DRS Heat Shrink Tubing Series

DRS is a family of halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin heat shrink tubes, not a single part: the WLDRS3 green single-wall system, the WLDRS2 dual-wall adhesive-lined system and the YCDR52 ultra-thin-wall system share one chemistry platform and one size matrix: ID Φ0.8 to Φ125 mm, eight colours, service -55°C to +125°C, while differing in wall, ratio and duty. RoHS, TUV-PAHS and SONY SS-00259 documentation attaches to the family. This page explains how the systems divide; the single-product 2:1 halogen-free tube has its own page.

How the systems divide

WLDRS3 : the green single-wall system. The straight insulation member of the family: one recovered wall, no adhesive, halogen-free flame-retardant compound, and green as its standard colour. Use it where the duty is insulation and identification, the assembly stays dry, and the halogen-free requirement comes from the specification rather than from a sealing need.

WLDRS2 : the dual-wall adhesive system. Same cross-linked polyolefin outer wall with a hot-melt adhesive inner layer. During recovery the adhesive melts, flows into the crevices of the connection and sets as the wall cools, so the finished position resists moisture tracking along the conductor. The adhesive changes both what the tube can do and how it must be installed: heat has to hold long enough for the inner layer to flow, and the position is not meant to be reopened afterwards.

YCDR52 : the ultra-thin-wall system. The space-critical member. A thin recovered wall suits dense electronics and tight enclosures where a standard wall would crowd neighbouring parts or add unwanted stiffness to a short rigid span. The trade is mechanical: thin wall gives up abrasion allowance, so it belongs inside protected builds, not on leads that get handled.

On the words "environmentally friendly"

Older literature labels this series environmentally friendly. Treat it as purchasing shorthand for two auditable facts: the compound is halogen-free, and the family carries RoHS, TUV-PAHS and SONY SS-00259 chemical-content documentation. It is not an engineering property and not a performance claim. Nothing on this page asserts biodegradation, recycled content or footprint data, because none has been verified. When you write this series into a BOM, cite the standards; the adjective does not survive an audit, the standard numbers do.

Failure modes specific to the DRS family

Each member fails differently. These are the ones that belong to this family's construction, not general tubing issues.

WLDRS2: adhesive flowed, then retracted — ends not sealed

Root cause: heat was pulled too early. The adhesive melted but never had time to wet the surfaces and hold shape as it cooled; after cooling it pulled back from the ends, leaving a glossy-looking cover with open capillary paths under the liner.

Fix: keep even heat on the recovered section until the adhesive visibly wets at both ends, then let it cool without disturbance before flexing the position. Sealed ends show the adhesive fillet just proud of the cut edge on both sides: inspect for it before sign-off.

WLDRS2: installed where it must come apart again

Root cause: the adhesive liner was chosen for a serviceable position. Once recovered and cooled the bond is permanent by design; cutting it off for rework damages the underlying insulation and turns a five-minute change into a splice.

Fix: reserve WLDRS2 for positions that stay closed. Anywhere the harness expects maintenance (service loops, connector fields, prototype builds) take the single-wall systems.

YCDR52: wall snagged or split during installation

Root cause: the ultra-thin wall met a burr, a sharp lug edge or a fingernail during handling. Thin wall tolerates far less mechanical insult during the slide-on; a nick that a standard wall shrugs off becomes the tear that opens during recovery.

Fix: deburr and radius everything the tube passes over, handle the expanded tube at the body rather than the edge, and inspect the wall against light before heating: a pre-existing nick shows as a bright line.

Ordered by ratio alone — wrong sub-series arrives

Root cause: the family spans several ratios and several walls, so "3:1 tubing" is not an orderable description. The part that arrives may be a different system than the BOM intended: right ratio, wrong wall, wrong compliance set.

Fix: specify sub-series, ratio, size and colour together, or just send diameters and duty and let us return the full code. Receiving inspection should check the sub-series marking, not only the size.

Green colour read as a performance guarantee

Root cause: WLDRS3's green is its standard colour and its identity in the family: nothing more. A green sleeve from another source, or a different Wellele series in green, does not carry this system's documentation set.

Fix: audit by the certificate and the printed part code, never by colour. The compliance documents travel with the batch; keep them with the receiving record.

Frequently asked questions

Are all DRS variants the same shrink ratio?

No, and the page does not pretend they are. The series spans 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 systems, and which ratio belongs to which sub-series is exactly the mapping we are completing: WLDRS3 (green single-wall) and WLDRS2 (dual-wall adhesive) are ordered in multiple ratio options, while the ratio coverage of the YCDR52 ultra-thin system and the remaining sub-series still needs the factory list confirmed per the data note on this page. Practically this means you should never order a DRS part by ratio alone: send the diameters and the duty, and we return the sub-series and ratio that actually exist in the size you need.

Which compliance documents apply to which DRS series?

Three document names attach to this family: RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances in the EU), TUV-PAHS (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon testing) and SONY SS-00259 (the Sony supplier chemical-substance standard). What we will not do is claim all three for every sub-series until the per-series certificates are matched. The verified scope of each document across WLDRS3, WLDRS2 and YCDR52 is being confirmed per the data note. When you enquire, name the standard your end customer audits against and we show the certificate that covers the exact sub-series and batch you would receive.

When should a buyer choose DRS instead of the 2:1 halogen-free page?

Three situations move a requirement from the single-product 2:1 page to this family. First, the position needs an adhesive liner; WLDRS2 carries a hot-melt inner layer that fills and seals at the ends, which the single-wall 2:1 tube does not have. Second, the build is space-critical; the YCDR52 ultra-thin walls exist for tight enclosures where a standard recovered wall would crowd the assembly. Third, the diameter step is steeper than 2:1 can bridge. Higher-ratio systems in the family clear a bulky connector and still grip a thin lead in one piece. If none of the three applies, the 2:1 halogen-free tube is the simpler part and usually the more economical one.

What does "environmentally friendly" actually mean for this tubing?

On this page it is a purchasing shorthand, not an engineering property. The verifiable content behind it: the compound is halogen-free, and the series carries RoHS, TUV-PAHS and SONY SS-00259 documentation: chemical-content restrictions and test scope, each tied to a specific standard and certificate. What it does not claim: that the tube biodegrades, contains recycled content, or has a lower carbon footprint. No such data has been verified for this series. Specify from the standards list, not from the adjective; the standards are auditable, the adjective is not.

Is WLDRS2 the right choice wherever a position gets wet?

It is the family's sealing system, but wet is not automatically its territory. The adhesive liner earns its place where the joint must resist moisture along the conductor path: exposed connectors, washdown areas, buried or outdoor runs. Inside a dry enclosure the liner adds cost and rework difficulty for no function, and a cut wrap position that must be reopened later argues against any adhesive-lined system because the bond is not designed to release. Match WLDRS2 to positions where the adhesive does a job; keep the single-wall systems everywhere else.
