8.7/15kV Heat Shrink Cable Accessories: MV Kits

Medium-voltage heat-shrink kits for 8.7/15kV screened cable: terminations and intermediate joints built as layered systems: stress control over the screen cut, insulation over the connector, sealing over the sheath. Multi-layer polyolefin/silicone composites, outdoor and indoor versions, service range -50℃~+125℃, referenced to IEC 60502. Send the cable construction and we return the exact kit list.

What makes this an MV system, not a big LV kit

At 8.7/15kV the design problem changes. The screen is cut back to make the joint or termination, and the electric field that was symmetric inside the screen concentrates at that cut. An untreated concentration drives partial discharge and eventually tracks the insulation surface to failure. The kit answers with layers the LV sets do not carry: a stress control tube whose semi-conductive/insulating composite wall grades the field over a defined length, then insulating layers recovered over it, then the weather-shed and sealing components for the position. The layers work as a system: replacing one layer with a generic tube of the same size removes the grading function even if the diameter still fits.

Cable construction inputs we quote from

Send these per cable type; each one changes which components the kit includes:

Termination vs intermediate joint

A termination ends the cable at switchgear, a transformer bushing or a motor box. Its kit must grade the field at the screen cut and shed water if outdoor. An intermediate joint connects two cable ends mid-run: the kit must rebuild insulation across the connector and restore screen continuity through the joint body. A function a termination kit does not contain. State the count of each position type; the two kits are not interchangeable.

Installation sequence

  1. Prepare and clean. Strip sheath, screen and insulation to the position-specific lengths; clean the insulation surface : contamination at MV is a partial-discharge seed.
  2. Slide components on before connecting. Every tube and body must be on the cable before the connector is crimped : heat-shrink has no second chance to reload.
  3. Make the connection. Crimp the connector; at a joint, complete the conductor connection and its insulation rebuild stage per the kit sheet.
  4. Position stress control first. The stress-control component goes over the screen cut and is recovered before any insulating layer : order matters because each later layer is sized to sit over the previous one.
  5. Recover insulation outward. Insulating tubes next, each with an even hot-air pass from the connection point outward, then the outdoor weather shed if the position is outdoor.
  6. Restore screen continuity and seal. Complete the screen-continuity step at joints, recover the outer sealing sleeves over the sheath cuts.

System qualification context

A kit on its own does not make a qualified 8.7/15kV joint: the system result also reflects how the cable is built, how the crew executes the work and which commissioning tests the project runs. Treat the kit's class marking as one input and test the finished installation. The kits are referenced to IEC 60502; the per-kit type-test scope (which tests, which report levels we can issue) is being verified.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an 8.7/15kV kit include stress-control components when an LV kit does not?

At medium voltage the electric field concentrated at the cut end of the screen is the main failure driver: left untreated, it concentrates stress at the screen termination until the insulation tracks or breaks down. The kit therefore includes stress-control components that grade the field over a controlled length before the insulating layers go on. At 0.6/1kV the field is weak enough that no such layer is needed. That is the component-count difference between the LV and MV kits.

What cable data does an 8.7/15kV heat-shrink kit quote from?

Six items decide the kit: system voltage class, conductor cross-section, core count, insulation outside diameter over each core, screen structure (armored or unarmored) and sheath type, plus the indoor/outdoor duty of each position. Insulation OD is the sizing dimension; the screen and sheath answers determine which screen-continuity and sealing components ship in the kit.

How does installation of an MV heat-shrink kit differ from an LV kit?

The recovery step is the same hot-air technique, but MV adds preparation and layer order: the screen must be cut back and the stress-control component positioned over the screen cut before any insulating layer is recovered. Each layer (stress control, insulation, weather shed) is recovered in sequence, and the preparation usually takes longer than the recovery itself. Cleanliness of the insulation surface before recovery matters more at MV because partial discharge starts at contamination points.

Does the kit qualify the finished joint for the 8.7/15kV system?

No, the kit is rated 8.7/15kV as a component. The completed termination or joint depends on the cable construction, the workmanship and the testing the project applies to the finished installation. Have the finished installation tested per the project's commissioning procedure, and treat the kit's class marking as the compatibility input it is.

What is the standard reference for these kits?

The kits are referenced to IEC 60502, the standard family for MV power cables and their accessories. Batch certificates are issued per shipment; tell us your target market and we align the filing. The per-kit type-test scope is being verified: see the DATA_REQUIRED note on this page.

When would we choose the cold-shrink 8.7/15kV kits instead?

Choose cold-shrink when the installation site bans open flame or has no safe power for heat tools: switchgear rooms, manholes, refineries, mining. Cold-shrink kits ship pre-stretched on a removable core and grip without heat; they cost more per position but remove the heat-tool variable entirely. Where crews already work with hot-air equipment, the heat-shrink kits remain the economical choice.
